Strolling along Shanghai Old Street
It seems as if you were back to the Old Shanghai’s prosperous fair 100 years ago by just walking along the unique Shanghai Old Street. Initially known as a multi-purpose Miaoqian Street that combined sightseeing, shopping, entertainment, recreation and culture as one, Shanghai Old Street was the home to a number of pioneering money houses, gold & silver stores, taverns, tea houses and theatrical stages and trading companies, serving as a corridor linking the City God Temple and the Yuyuan Garden.

Favorable geographical position and rich human landscapes bestow Shanghai Old Street with profound commercial culture connotation, and the street measures 825 meters long stretching Henan South Road in the west to Renmin Road in the east, whose architectural style (from west to east) showcases Shanghai’s historical vicissitudes from later Qing dynasty to the Republic of China and then to the modern China.

Dominated by traditional highlighted industries with a dense cultural atmosphere, Shanghai Old Street is divided into the east section and west section by Guanyi Street, of which the former is in a style of Republic of China period after renovation, highlighted by lattice windows and door panels, and the latter is modeled on the architectures built in the Ming and Qing dynasty, highlighted by folk customs of the Old Shanghai.

The quintessential architecture complex on Shanghai Old Street recreates the prosperous scene of the Old Shanghai, represented by famous brands of Tong Han Chun, Lao Tong Sheng, Wu Liang Cai, Wan You Quan, Qiu Tian Bao, Old Shanghai Teahouse, Deshun Restaurant, Chunfengdeyi Tower, Xishidongfu House, Dingnianzi Clothing Store, Rongshun Hall and Boyin Hall as well as Danfeng Teahouse and Mingyi Hall, all of which fully showcases the folk daily life in Old Shanghai together with the Star Avenue in the north.
