The Moon over Longji Terraced Field
As a holy land filled with undiscovered talents in the mountainous area of north Guilin, Longsheng is noticeable to the world for its dragon ridge field (or Longji Terraced Field), where the huge dragon lives according to the local legend. A drove of Zhuang ethnic people settled in this area 600 years ago, who hewed the mountains and created Longji Terraced Rice Field to benefit the later generations throughout the ages. Seen from afar, the round-shaped terraced field on the mountain resembles a huge eye of a dragon, hence its name. As the moon shines at night, Longji Terraced Field is more charming and wonderful.
Seeking the Charm of Danxia Topography
In Chinese history, there are a number of artists, litterateurs and geologists who spent all their lives in Ziyuan of Guilin in exploring its unique Danxia topography, which is filled with a strong sense of mystery, and two ethnic festivals you’d never miss are available here, namely, the March 3rd Song Festival and the Ghost Festival (on 14th of July). It’s a custom for the people in Ziyuan to light the torches by the rivers to offer sacrifices to their ancestors on the Ghost Festival every year.

The Running Water in the Ling Canal
Emperor Qinshihuang unified the other 6 kingdoms in 221 B.C. and ordered his army to conquer Baiyue (present Guangdong and Guangxi). Approached by three routes, the Qin army came up against fierce resistance by the Guilin people, so the Ling Canal linking the Xiang River, the Li River, the Yangtze River and the Pearl River was built under imperial order to defeat the Baiyue minority, and it’s really nostalgic for visitors to appreciate the fine views along the Ling Canal now.
