Revisiting University after 3 Years
Have graduated from University for over 3 years and rather curious about how it looks like just now, I excitedly decide to visit it alone during Christmas from Guilin where I work, and I consider it a nostalgic journey to the past as well as a promise to the future.
As cold as ever the wind in winter is in campus, and so much has changed here. Walking into it through the main gate, I find that the college students passing by me are new to me and I feel I’m a visible alien in the very place where I’ve studied; the old buildings on both sides of European Street are refurbished and take a new look, where I used to have so much fun with my good friend and mates becomes more and more unfamiliar, and the only familiar things are four white-marble statues of Greek Gods on European Street Square, still remaining calm silent and reminding me how the gone days were wonderful. Keep on walking across a long bridge; and I reach the Spanish Street, where a number of brand-new Spanish-style buildings have been added during the last 3 years, highlighted by a garden-style fountain with white-marble statues of Gods and divine horses embedded. Rather stunning, I still remembered this Spanish-style Street was an empty ground 6 years ago, and it boasts the most impressive street in the university, on whose both sides stand the modern teaching buildings and fancy restaurants as well as stores.
As the night falls, I proceed my way to the river in the western section. Surrounded by a red opera house and green meadows, the river meanders from north to south and turns to east with rows of willows trembling in the wind, perfectly complementing their reflections and the dim moonlight in the water, O, what a lovely night! I used to do my morning reading with my classmates along the river, where so many wonderful memories I’d shared with them still linger on my mind, however, where are they now? Standing by the riverside and looking eastward, I see the Fisherman Pavilion standing out in silhouette against the moonlight, which witnesses how time flies in this campus.
After a nostalgic tour around campus, I return to European Street Square, where a number of college students sing and dance around a tall Christmas tree decorated with shining lights and wish-making cards, and I have a resonance with them as I recollect the memorable Christmas I spent with my good friends during my college days, and God knows how I envy the new faces just now! After all these year, I realize that it is my bosom friends in the campus who I miss most.
The bell rings from nowhere, and it’s time for me to leave now cause’ I know I don’t belong here. Goodbye, my long-lost friend.
