The following barrier lakes all formed under the power of nature: when the lava flows during vulcanian eruption or the rocks during landslide cut off the river valley or riverbed, the water gathers together and forms a lake. In China, there are a great of this kind of lakes, and some of them have been developed into a tourist resort. Below are the most famous ones.

1. Mysterious Barrier Lake: Huguang Yan in Zhanjiang Citu, Guangdong Province

The full name of Huguang Yan is Guangdong Zhanjiang Huguang Yan National Geological Park (广东湛江湖光岩国家地质公园). The formation of Huguang Yan Lake is because of volcanic activity, and this kind of lake is called Maar Lake. There are only two Maar Lakes in the world at present, the bigger one is Huguang Yan, and another is in German. The lake covers an area of 2.3 square kilometers. Besides the beautiful scenery around the lake, Huguang Yan is also famous for miracles: such as 1) when the fallen leaves in the lake neither float nor sink, and they would disappear in 5 hours; 2) there are a lot of fish and shrimp living in the lake, but no frog, leech and snake; 3) Some students have witnessed 4-meter fish and 2-meter turtle in the lake, and the huge turtle even saved a drowning man; 4) it seems that travelers who are climbing hills in selva area can get a buoyancy force, so they feel very easy to climb hills; 5) the water level of the middle lake is 30 centimeters below that of lakeside.

2. Huge Barrier Lake: Five Great Chain Lakes in Heilongjiang Province

The Five Great Chain Lakes have the most completed volcanic geologic landform, and five lakes (respectively are Lotus Lake, Yanshan Lake, White Dragon Lake, Heming Lake and Ruyi Lake) joint as a string of beads. There are cool cave for avoiding summer heat and hot spring for swimming in winter. Summer and autumn are the best time to visit there. In autumn (especially around Early October), visitors can appreciate the colorful autumn leaves and the autumn scenery of volcanic moss. However, you are advised to learn some geology knowledge before visiting the lakes, hence, you can understand the miracles and magnificence more freely.

3. Barrier Lake on High Mountain: Jingpo Lake in Heilongjiang Province

Jingpo Lake formed millions of years ago, because the basalt magma cut off Mudan River. It is the second largest barrier lake on mountain in the world. Diaoshui Lou Waterfall, also name Jingpo Lake Waterfall, is a waterfall exactly like Niagara Falls, and there is a diving performance every day at 10am. The water flow of the waterfall is manual controlled, only during the diving performance visitors can appreciate the great scenery.

This very special small museum is dedicated to introducing Kongzhu (literally translated as “empty bamboo”), or Chinese Yoyo, or Diabolo. What is a Kongzhu? Here is quoted from China Highlights:’ A diabolo, or Chinese Yoyo, formerly also known as "the devil on two sticks", is a juggling folk toy made of bamboo and wood. It is an empty roller shaped like a dumbbell, which is spun and tossed on a string tied to two sticks, held one in each hand.’ Interested? Let’s go see about this little gadget at Beijing Diabolo Museum.

It is located near Baoguo Temple in Xuanwu District, Beijing, in those traditional Beijing neighborhoods. The museum is arranged in a courtyard house, which is now becoming less and less because of the modernization process of the country. There are three halls, introducing the history, workmanship and playing techniques. Also there are workshops where visitors can see how a diabolo is made. There are also diabolo experts who can tell about the story and play the diabolos. I think this kind of museum is not only interesting, but also important for preserving the very old traditions and techniques.
