I traveled from Hangzhou to the Yellow Mountains last month. Below is my itinerary:

Hangzhou – Tunxi – The Yellow Mountains – The South Gate of the Yellow Mountain (Ciuangge慈光阁), The North Gate of the Yellow Mountains ( Yungu Temple) – Hot Springs – Zaixi (寨西) – Jade Valley (翡翠谷) – Hongcun Village – Tunxi Old Street

Buses from Hangzhou to the Yellow Mountains Scenic Area depart from Hangzhou West Station at 8am, 9:50 am and 10:50 am.

There are also buses from Hangzhou West Station to Tunxi Town. The ticket price is 88 yuan, and the journey takes about 3 hours.

Bus travels from Tunxi Town to Tangkou Transfer Station at the foot of the mountains for around 1.5 hours. The ticket price is 20 yuan.

There are two transfer stations: Zhaixi Transfer Station and Tangkou Transfer Station. Tangkou Transfer Station is located at the foot of the mountains while the other one is a bit farther away. All travelers need to get off at the transfer stations and change to buses run by the scenic area to the mountains.

The road from the transfer stations up to the entrance to the Yellow Mountain Scenic Area is full of sharp turns. This 0.5-hour journey is accompanied with great views of bamboo forests.

The Yellow Mountains can be divided into two parts: the front part and the rear part. The entrance to the front part is Ci Guang Ge (慈光阁), and the entrance to the rare part is Yungu Temple. The difference between the front part and the rear part lies in the scenery. The scenery of the front part is more charming, while the rear part looks more majestic.

The Yellow Mountains

I ascended the mountain from the front part. There is a cableway from Ci Guang Ge to Yuping Tower (Jade Screen Tower). The cable is long, very steep. Ticket for the cableway is 80 yuan. I planned to visit Tiandu Peak, the Guest-greeting Pine Tree, Lotus Peak, 100-step Scalling Ladder and a Line-like Sky.

Tiandu Peak is said the most beautiful peak on the mountains. But it is closed. The peak will be close for 5 years and will open to travelers 5 years later.

Tiandu Peak

Tiandu Peak of Yellow Mountain

Tiandu Peak is the second highest peak on the mountain. The highest peak is Lotus Peak with an altitude of 1864 meters. Views of the mountains from Lotus peak are said fabulous in clear days, but I did not have a nice view due to the heavy fogs.

Yellow Mountain in fogs

The Guest-greeting pine is one of the most famous sights on the mountains. There are usually crowds of tourists there, and you may need to line to take a photo of it.

Goods sold on the mountain top are expensive. For example, a cucumber costs around 10 yuan, one bottle of instant noodles cost 20 yuan (normal 5 yuan).

Sunrise is one of the four spectacles of the mountain. The best venue to watch the sunrise is the Bright Peak. I got up at 4:30 am but when I arrived, there were groups of travelers waiting for the spectacular sight. It is chilly on the mountain and you need to bring warm clothes. We missed the sunrise as it is rainy season. The chance to see the sunrise in this season is slim.

The Mountain in the morning

The West Sea Grand Canyon is one of the highlights of the mountains, and is definitely worth seeing. The scenery on the the part from Tianhai (天海) to Buxian Bridge (步仙桥) is fabulous. There are usually fewer tourists in the West Sea Grand Canyon than other sights on the mountains, as most travel group don’t go to the sight in order to save time.

The road from Paiyun Pavilion (排云亭) to the bottom of the canyon is steep and hard, the hardest road on the mountain. All are plank roads built along cliffs. The road is about 5 kilometers long. A knee pad is essential if you want to hike in this part.

Yellow Mountain Scenic Area (Huangshan)

Day 1

Yellow Mountain Scenic Area EntranceOn 25 August 2009 my wife and I took a coach direct from Hangzhou to Yellow Mountain Scenic Area, which took 3+ hours. The highway was high quality, and I noticed once again the prosperity of even the rural areas of Zhejiang Province. Anhui, the next province containing Huangshan (黄山/hwung-shan/ name of a city, it’s prefecture, and a renowned mountainous area), is comparatively poor. However, Huangshan still has the largest entry fee of any attraction I’ve heard of in China: 200 yuan. It’s worth it!

Huangshan is an absolutely awesome collection of smooth and steep peaks, with beautifully rounded boulders, often steeped in its enchanting sea of cloud. No wonder legends of immortal beings and heavenly places were birthed here. The mountains get their name from the legendary Yellow Emperor, father of the Chinese, who is said to have lived there.

Huangshan PathIt is said that “if you’ve been to the Yellow Mountains you don’t need to see any other mountains in China”. While I don’t agree with that, the Yellow Mountains are a great contender for the best, because of the atmosphere there. It has a wonderful austerity with its clean rock faces and lack of vegetation apart from Yellow Mountain Pines.

We arrived in time for lunch, which we had at a small restaurant near the main gate. We shared a taxi with some overseas travelers to cover the 10 km (6 miles) of winding road to the Cloud Valley (云谷 Yungu /ywnn-goo/) ticket gate. Here you could take a cable car/ telpher, or walk the 600-meter-tall path of shady stone steps, to White Goose Ridge (白鹅峰 Baie Feng /beye-ur fnng/), where the really amazing views begin. We chose the steps for a bit of exercise.

North Sea HotelNext we went to our hotel. Black Tiger Pine looks particularly eerie in the twilight, particularly if you imagine a tiger in its branches as the monk who named the tree did many years ago. There are hotels in the flatter area below and east of Bright Summit, notably West Sea Hotel and North Sea Hotel. We chose North Sea Hotel. We chose to get an early night so we could get up for the sunrise the next day.

Day 2

Dawn at Dawn Pavilion, HuangshanWe got up in the dark and made our way to Dawn Pavilion, joined by scores of Hong Kong tourists proceeding from West Sea Hotel, who produced an excited cheer when the sun finally appeared after an hour’s wait! After enjoying and photographing the dawn we headed east to see some of the strangely shaped rocks.

Monkey Viewing Sea, HuangshanFrom Beginning-To-Believe Peak we saw my favourite of Huangshan's oddly-shaped rocks: Monkey Viewing the Sea. From our vantage point behind the boulder monkey we also gazed out on the North Cloud Sea.

Lotus Peak and Heaven's Capital Peak, HuangshanI then set out on my own journey to climb the three tallest peaks. I arrived at Bright Summit (光明顶 Guangming Ding /gwung-ming ding/ 1840m) still early in the morning. Surely the most popular peak with its views and proximity to the hotels, it was crawling with people. After photoing the view of the other two large peaks found a place off the beaten track to peacefully gaze at the scenery, and watch the clouds scudding by in front of me and below -- a heavenly perspective.

Busy Path, HuangshanAfter that break I continued on my way towards Lotus Peak (莲花峰 Lianhua Feng /lyen-hwaa fnng/ 1,864m, the tallest peak) along the paths and steps crowded with tourists. I particularly disliked the slow moving tour groups blocking the narrow paths and tour guides with loud hailers, making their commentary echo round the mountains, and spoiling the peace.

Split Path, Huangshan

As the beautiful faces of the Yellow Mountains are so steep the path made of stone slabs and steps wound it's way in a steep and circuitous route, sometimes obstructed by large chunks of rock constructing the path. When I arrived at the foot of Lotus Peak I found the path to the summit was barred by a steel gate with a notice saying "Closed for Footpath Maintenance" or something similar. So I continued on towards Heavenly Capital Peak (天都峰 Tiandu Feng /tyen-doo fnng/ 1,829m).

Welcoming Guest Pine, The Yellow MountainsBetween the Base of Heavenly Capital and the top of the Yuping ('Jade Screen') Telpher is Huangshan's most famous pine, Welcoming Guest Pine (迎客松 Ying Ke Song /ying ker song/). Here the tourists and pilgrims milled around endlessly, all trying to have their picture taken with the famous tree.

Steps Up Heavenly Capital, HuangshanBoulders and Pines, HuangshanAfter eventually working my way through the crowds I made the very steep ascent of Heavenly Capital. The steps hew out of the rock were set at an angle of up to 70 degress. Heavenly Capital has a precipitous ridge (with steel cable hand rails) and some stunning boulder and pine formations.

The climb to the summit of Heavenly Capital was well worth it. I looked back on Lotus Peak and Bright Summit and could appreciate the scale of the Yellow Mountains. Heavenly Capital and Bright Summit were only about 2km apart as the crow flies, but the journey by foot requires 2 or 3 hours of climbing up and down steep steps and waiting to get past other people on the narrow paths.

Lotus Peak and Bright Summit, HuangshanRidge on Heaven's Capital, HuangshanHuangshan Scenic Area is a truly compact collection of natural wonders, packing awe-inpiring views into just a few square kilometers. You don't have to walk far to see a lot.

Flown Over Stone and Taiping TelpherOn my way back from Heavenly Capital to North Sea Hotel I turned left just before Bright Summit to see the Flying Over Stone and Taiping Telpher (Huangshan's 3rd telpher and one of the longest in the world at over 3km).

Carrying Building Materials up Cloud Valley, HuangshanDay 3

The third day included the descent of Huangshan, visits to Hongcun and Tunxi, and the return journey to Hangzhou. On the way down the Cloud Valley path we saw many manual labourers carrying hotel linen, food and drink, and building material up the steps. This work is probably only done in the early morning while it is cooler as we saw none of this on the way up.
