The Most Beautiful Lands in June

June is a summer month in China, when almost all the lives are in their exuberant period, being full of vigor. It would be the best time to have a close encounter with vast land in China. This time, Lynn would like to introduce you several most beautiful lands in China of June.

1. Longji Rice Terrace, Longsheng, Guangxi

Highlight: The terraces were assarted along the wavy hills, and the beautiful mountains and clear water make the Longji Rice Terraces more like pictures. The elevation of the terraces covers a range from 300 meters to 1100 meters. June is the growing month for rice, and the terraces are dressed up with green skirt.

2. Red Land in Dongchuan, Yunnan Province

Highlight: It is the attraction of color. The fairyland looks like a pitch of land burning with red lame. June is the growing season for potatoes; bottle-green leaves decorated by white potato flower, together with those pitches of idle red land, the Dongchuan Red Land looks like a huge roll of oil painting.

Tips for photographing
A. The land is especially gorgeous after the rains.
B. The light and color for the land at dusk would better than that in the morning.
C. The best point for seeing sunrise is Dama Kan (打 马坎), and the best point for seeing sunset are in Lepu Ao (乐普 凹) and Waliang Fangzi (瓦梁房子)

3. Purple Lavender Field in Yili Hegu, Xinjiang

Highlight: The lavender field in Yili Hegu covers an area of more than 5 square miles. What a magnificent purple sea and a fairy world!

Tip: The flowering phase of purple lavenders is short, visitors need to finish their visiting before June 20 when almost all the lavenders having been harvested.

4. Hulun Beier Grassland, Inner Mongolia

Hulun Beier Grassland is honored the most beautiful grassland in China by Chinese National Geography. The best time for visiting Hulun Beier Grassland is from June to September, when the green grassland stretches to the horizon and is decorated with flocks of sheep and cows, small colorful flowers and glassy lakes.

Tips
A. The temperature range in June is from 11℃ to 23 ℃, the difference in temperature between day and night is big and there are plenty of rains, hence warm clothes and rain gears are necessary.
B. If taking photos with a single lens reflex, a stable tripod is needed, for the strong wind on the grassland. The ultraviolet on the grassland is strong; hence a PL lens can make your photos higher-quality.

Arriving at night at the massive Beijing airport after a long flight, all we can think about is going to the hotel to rest but not after having our dinner.

The weather is cool; the night sky, clear and everyone is hungry. Once at the restaurant, everyone just dived in when the food was served. Who knew, eggplant could taste this good! If this is what’s in store for us in Beijing, a surprise in what seems ordinary, then, we couldn’t wait to see the sights and look forward to our tour.

We toured Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Sacred Way, Summer Palace, The Great Wall of China (Mutianyu), The Lama Temple, Olympic Village, The Ming Tomb, went riding on a rickshaw and looking at old houses in Hutong district, attended a Tea ceremony, rode the bullet train to Tianjin, went to the Jade, Silk and Pearl factories. We also enjoyed watching the very unique Kung-fu Show.

Our tour guide, Lily was very knowledgeable and very helpful. She showed us a lot of insights, especially in the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace.

Even if it’s a long week we didn’t feel tired instead we feel that our time in Beijing was too short. We could have explored it some more if we had more than a week. We really enjoyed every part of the trip and we can’t wait to go back.

Over another good Quintet breakfast, met a Pommy couple who bought & restored an old house in Crete 16 years ago & now live. Thought such folks were only on the tele series but they're real!
As no-one was booked into the Oriental Pearl room after us, Quintet let us keep the room until we had to leave for the airport this afternoon at 4.45pm. Great service!

We wandered around a few more streets, popped into to Bi Feng Tang for a few snacks before our flight, then returned to Quintet & packed our bags for the last time. A short time on Quintet's rooftop patio & then Jason appeared in the courtyard, having arrived early to pick us up (he'd remembered the front door code).

French Concession Area, Shanghai

French Concession Area, Shanghai
A pretty good trip to the airport and another very efficient check-in through the on-line counter, then it was goodbye to Jason, quick boarding - and we were off back to Oz.

A good overnight flight - Thanks Qantas - arrived on time at 8.40am & we were out of immigration/baggage/customs at 9.00am Is this a record for Sydney Airport? It is for us!

Pity our courier home didn't arrive for another 25 minutes, but I suppose they were surprised too!

So endeth our 5th trip to China, a country where progress is unbelievable compared with Oz, where we are always welcomed by wonderfully friendly people with a marvellous community attitude & culture to be admired, and where there is so much for us still to explore.

China is a time-honored country, and the long history lefts China a great number of historical sites, including lots of ancient towns, such as Lijiang Dayan Ancient Town (丽江大研古城) Wuzhen Ancient Town (乌镇), Zhouzhuang Ancient Town (周庄), Xitang Ancient Town (西塘古镇), Phoenix Ancient Town (凤凰古镇) and Pingyao Ancient Town (平遥古镇). Here, I would like to talk about several “non-mainstream” ancient towns which are well-kept with no commercial culture.

1. Daxu Ancient Town in Guilin, Guangxi 大圩古镇

Daxu Ancient town is built along middle section of the Li River. The ancient town can be dated back to AD 200. In the North Song Dynasty (960–1127), it used to be a prosperous market town, and even in the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), it has been listed as one of the four ancient towns in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. However, this ancient town is not influenced by commercial culture till now, and travelers can appreciate an undiluted ancient town there.

2. Chaji Ancient Town 查济古镇

Chaji Ancient Town is an ancient village located at the foot of the Yellow Mountains, with well-kept ancient architectural complex. There are more than 100 architectures built in the Yuan (1271–1368), Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties styles. The exquisite gingerbreads on the ancient architectures add more highlights to the ancient town.

3. Baoshan Stone Town: the paradise for Naxi Minority 宝山石头城

About 120 kilometers from Lijiang City (丽江), there is an ancient town situated in the canyon of Jinsha River (金沙江, the upper section of the Yangtze River). The ancient town was built on a huge mushroom-shape rock, hence its name Stone Town. The houses, language, culture and custom there show travelers a totally true Naxi Minority, a minority mainly lives in Yunnan Province.

4. Heshun Ancient Town, Yunnan Province 和顺古镇

The ancient town is 3 kilometers southwest from Tengchong County, Yunnan Province. It got its name from a river (it is “he” in Chinese Pinyin) running around the town. Ancient architectures with the Ming and Qing dynasties style and typical Yunnan style scatter in the town. The town was built near the mountain and by the river, which makes it more attractive.

5. Bing’an Ancient Town 丙安古镇

The ancient town is 25 kilometers from Chishui City in Guizhou Province. The town leans against the green mountains, with the other sides surrounding by rivers. The unique wooden Diaojiao Lou (wooden or bamboo houses supported by wooden pillars) recorded the town’s history. The forest cover rate of this area is 92.5%, which gives a nice environment to the ancient town.
